Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, lies right in the heart of Europe. Prague has played an important role in the history of the Czech Republic and Europe. In 1992, the historical centre of Prague was listed in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) World Cultural and Natural Heritage Register. Prague was also one of nine cities awarded by the European Community the title of "European City of Culture" for the year 2000. For centuries, prominent personalities have paid homage to Prague. Mozart, Beethoven, Dostojevsky, Tchaikovsky and even the British Queen Elizabeth II and Pope John Paul II professed their appreciation of its beauty. The native town of Prague is reflected in the works of Jan Neruda, Jaroslav Hasek, Franz Kafka, Max Brod and Egon Erwin Kisch.

Prague represents a unique collection of historical monuments, museums and galleries dominated by the Prague Castle, which towers high above the city. It is a specimen of all artistic styles and movements. The historical core of the city is situated on both banks of the Vltava River, the longest Czech River. This area consists of six parts, all formerly independent urban units that were unified in the 18th century. Many picturesque areas are scattered along the Vltava River and its charming Certovka arm. Prague is divided into 10 major parts

PRAGUE 1

Prague 1 consists mainly of 3 parts: Staré Město (Old Town), Malá Strana and Josefov. It´s truly an architectural treasure chest. If you are looking for something medieval, this is the place to be. You will be surrounded by history, museums, theaters, high-class restaurants and fashion boutiques. Everything is easily accesable by foot, though the center is very well connected by trams and 3 subway lines. Parking might be difficult to find and a permit is required.

Malá Strana located on the left river bank, with it´s unique architecture and antique cobblestone streets, unchanged for centuries, is home to lots of foreign embassies, gardens and best restaurants.

Old Town and Josefov located on the right river bank, still very much an international meeting and market place, are connected to Malá Strana by the famous Charles Bridge. You see, this is some of the most coveted real estate in town. In the old ghetto´s place arose fantastically-sculpted apartment buildings fronting bucolic tree lined streets. PRAGUE 2

Vinohrady, conveniently connected with the city center by trams and subway system, not crowded by tourists, it is one of the most desirable residential neighborhoods. PRAGUE 4

It´s becoming a very popular office area with lots of newly built business centers. Many large international companies have chosen this area for their headquarters. This part is connected with the center by subway line C.

PRAGUE 5

Directly neighboring Malá Strana, located on the left river bank of the Vltava, it is becoming more and more popular in the past few years. It has been transformed into a desirable shopping and entertainment destination - two cinema multiplexes are located here. It is home to numerous restaurants and cafes as well as the very popular and very crowded shopping mall – Nový Smíchov. PRAGUE 6

Neighborhood situated behind Prague Castle is famous for international embassies, huge mansions, villas and lots of greenery. PRAGUE 7

Troja is home to the ZOO and Botanical garden – popular weekend trips for families. PRAGUE 8

The most interesting part of Prague 8 is Karlín, located between Florenc and Křížikova subway stations (line B). Architecturaly similar to Vinohrady, this district is situated very close to the city centre, just minutes by subway or tram.

The north-eastern outskirts, with cheaper rents and massive shopping centres.

PRAGUE 10

Very popular for it´s close proximity to the city center, fast tram connection, parks and lower rents – direct neighbor of Vinohrady – Vrsovice. Transportation

The network of municipal buses, trams and subway (called METRO) has a wide and regular coverage. Prague integrated transport (PIT) consists of public transport services in Prague (Metro, trams, funicular to Petřín, city buses), suburban bus service (lines of series 300 and 400) and railway service (only 2nd class passenger and fast trains and selected express trains - specified in timetables of the Czech Railways) in Prague and suburban regions.
